Chiefs 38, Eagles 35. A double-digit second-half comeback to win Super Bowl LVII, powered in part by Kadarius Toney!

The former Giants wide receiver hauled in a 5-yard touchdown pass to give Kansas City its first lead of the game, then broke a 65-yard punt return — the longest in Super Bowl history — to set up another score. The Chiefs sealed the victory on a 27-yard field goal by Harrison Butker in the waning seconds after a controversial holding call on Eagles cornerback James Bradberry, also a former Giant.

Some quick thoughts:

• The Eagles blew that game. More specifically, their defense. They had a 10-point lead at halftime, but they never generated any pass rush. And then Chiefs coach Andy Reid began to pick apart Philly defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon. It may not be fair, but this result will play into the already-existing narrative the Eagles beat up on a bunch of tomato cans before wilting against an elite opponent.

• A second title is big for Patrick Mahomes’ legacy, but the way he did it is even more monumental. God only knows what that guy had injected into his ankle to play in the second half. And he was brilliant. A courageous, gutty performance for the ages.

• It was a ticky-tack call on Bradberry. But it was the right one. Fortunately we can count on Philadelphia to handle the disappointment with grace and poise.

• The Eagles will be fine. They aren’t going anywhere. Yes, they have to pay Jalen Hurts. But general manager Howie Roseman will work his salary cap magic as he always does.

• The Giants still made the right move dumping Toney. No one ever doubted his talent. But he was never going to work here. And who knows if he will ever stay healthy.

• If Reid actually retires — the possibility became a thing Sunday — someone should make sure Sean Payton is OK. And then call Jim Harbaugh for his thoughts.

This page’s first bet offer lets you experience the Super Bowl in a whole new way. Rather than tinkering with several little prop wagers, you get the opportunity to hammer one larger bet. That initial wager has some protection attached, which we elaborate upon below. For now, just know that all of the countless betting options BetMGM offers for SBLVII are valid here.

To automatically engage the BetMGM Ohio promo code necessary to unlock a $1,000 first bet offer for SBLVII, click here.

BetMGM Ohio Promo Code Offers Protection to First Wager

Ohio residents have been reaping the benefits of being the most recent state to launch its only sports betting platform since NYD. Super Bowl Sunday represents yet another example of that for those in the Buckeye State. After all, a BetMGM Ohio promo code unlocks a first bet offer in time for SBLVII. This page’s links do the work for you, locking in that promo code automatically.

By creating a first-time account through those links, Ohioans secure a $1,000 first bet offer. That first bet is valid on Super Bowl 57, as well as all other sports markets BetMGM carries. Additionally, BetMGM allows any wager type for this first bet. Thus, you can employ any prop bet, parlay, moneyline, spread, or total you want.

If your first bet wins, the sportsbook gives you your money in withdrawable cash form. Conversely, if that initial selection loses, BetMGM reimburses the loss in full up to $1,000. The refund shows up as bonus bets totaling the amount you risked. Those bonus bets have the same freedoms that the first bet did. Therefore, you get to bet a second time without risking anymore of your money. You will receive five bonus bets of equal amounts that add up to your original bet amount. First bets of less than $50 receive just one bonus bet for the full amount.

Simple Walkthrough Aids in Using BetMGM Ohio Promo Code

It’s already Super Bowl Sunday. So, if you intend to use this page’s first bet offer to bet on SBLVII, you’d have to act fast. As luck would have it, BetMGM set up registration and bonus acquisition to take just minutes. As such, with the four-step walkthrough provided below, you can get on board in time to bet on tonight’s game:

  • Above all, start by clicking here or any link on this page. As a result, you will automatically engage our exclusive BetMGM Ohio promo code.
  • Subsequently, you need to register a first-time BetMGM account by answering all sign-up questions. To clarify, the sportsbook requires your full name, home address, date of birth, etc.
  • Thirdly, make a $10 or greater first deposit, but make sure it’s large enough to support your intended first bet.
  • Finally, place your first bet for $10 or more. After that, if it loses, BetMGM refunds the loss up to $1,000 with bonus bets.

AJ Brown Specials Stand Out as Original First Bet Ideas

Jalen Hurts and Patrick Mahomes have received the bulk of the attention in the build up to Super Bowl 57. It stands to reason, as the quarterbacks are the engines of an NFL offense. However, there are plenty of other stars throughout the Philadelphia and Kansas City lineups. One of those is Eagles wide receiver AJ Brown. Brown was traded from Tennessee and has made a huge impact for the Birds.

The first bet that registrants collect with our BetMGM Ohio promo code is valid with any bet type in any sport. In other words, player props will become a popular choice for Ohioans enjoying this offer. BetMGM has a vast array of player prop options, including a whole section for AJ Brown. Here are some of his prop options:

  • Have 100+ receiving yards (+210).
  • Record more receiving yards than Travis Kelce (+100).
  • Have 10+ receptions (+825).
  • Record a 50+ yard reception (+850).

The Captain is back in the building. That is, the TV studio. Former Yankees captain and Hall of Famer Derek Jeter will join FOX MLB’s television crew.

FOX announced the hire during its Super Bowl pregame coverage in Glendale.

Jeter received a hug from his longtime frenemy Alex Rodriguez, who he’ll join at FOX this season. Just imagine the two of them needling each other to no end during broadcasts, and then add David Ortiz to the mix. The baseball analysis will be hit or miss. The entertainment factor, on the other hand, could be off the charts.

In all seriousness, this is the perfect gig for Derek Jeter at this stage of his post-baseball life. Being a part owner of the Miami Marlins didn’t work out. Something with minimal day-to-day commitments is probably what he needs. There’s no cushier gig than being a former athlete who then earns millions of dollars just for going on TV once a week.

On the whole, this should be a good addition for FOX. Derek Jeter is a name, but isn’t a showman like A-Rod or Big Papi. He’s soft-spoken and yet commands a room. It’s almost as if his playing for two decades and winning five World Series rings is some guarded secret that must be kept quiet. His analysis should thus be thoughtful, insightful and, most important of all, sincere.

And if he can throw in some well-timed barbs at Rodriguez or Ortiz, all the better. The only real mystery is if former White Sox slugger and fellow Hall of Famer Frank Thomas is staying on or leaving the network. Either way, adding Derek Jeter is probably an improvement across the board.

Jeter’s Yankees open the season at home against the San Francisco Giants on Mar. 30. Even better, spring training starts at the end of this week.

The line on the game is close, the teams are both loaded with star talent, and there are storylines galore. It stands to reason that most fans and sports bettors will have an angle they like. Subsequently, it’s highly likely that Caesars will offer odds on whatever that perceived angle might be.

Enter Caesars NY Promo Code to Get Three-Part Bonus

Caesars Sportsbook has an exciting way to bring in any New Yorker for an important bonus before the Super Bowl. By registering with Caesars NY promo code ESNYXLFULL, new users will claim a three-part bonus with a show-stopping headliner. The second and third parts of the bonus help dress up this already impressive primary bonus. To clarify, the registrant will earn 1,000 Reward Credits and 1,000 Tier Credits when they make their initial wager. These account enhancers help the sign-up improve their player status and work towards redeemable prizes.

However, the main reason New Yorkers are here is for the $1,250 first bet on Caesars that this promotion provides. This initial wager is valid using any bet type in any game from any sport Caesars offers. However, let’s be honest, if you’re registering today, it’s likely to employ that first bet on the Super Bowl. The first bet on Caesars will work with any parlay, adjusted spread/total, prop, or other wager you like. If your initial pick wins, Caesars pays you out in full with money that you can immediately withdraw. On the other hand, if your wager loses, the sportsbook refunds your loss in full up to $1,250. The reimbursement works as a bet credit, which allows you to make a whole new wager without further personal investment.

Utilize Caesars NY Promo Code Via Easy Four-Step Process

Knowing the Eagles-Chiefs kickoff is rapidly approaching, Caesars scaled back the registration and bonus acquisition processes for this promotion. As such, you can now get that $1,250 first bet on Caesars in your hands in a matter of minutes. The four-step process below will guide you to the finish line without duress:

  • Above all, make sure you input Caesars NY promo code ESNYXLFULL when requested during the registration process. You can initiate sign-up by clicking here or any link on this page.
  • After that, input all necessary data fields to create your first-time Caesars Sportsbook account. To clarify, this is simply where you will enter your name, address, email, date of birth, etc.
  • Third of all, complete a $10+ first deposit into your account. However, you will want to ensure that your deposit is large enough to support your intended first bet on Caesars.
  • Finally, make your first bet on Caesars, knowing the sportsbook refunds a loss with a bet credit up to $1,250.

This page focuses on those in New York. However, this page’s promo code will help anyone in an active Caesars state claim this same bonus. Those participating states are: WY, WV, VA, TN, PA, NJ, MI, LA, KS, IN, IL, IA, CO, AZ.

Interesting KC Trend Points to Winning Margin Band

When you employ this page’s Caesars NY promo code, you unlock a first bet with limitless potential and unmatched freedom. After all, you could choose to create a six-team $1,250 parlay that offers +10000 odds. Chances are, of course, that you are looking to wager on the Super Bowl itself. There are certainly a number of paths to choose, even within the Philadelphia-Kansas City matchup itself. Perhaps you have your mind made up for your first bet when you sign up. Or, maybe you want to shop around for something that jumps off the page at you.

One detail that many bettors are using to help narrow down their betting options centers around a little-known fact. The Kansas City Chiefs have played 32 straight games where they have either won the game or lost by four points or fewer. The last time they lost by more than that was a 27-3 defeat at Tennessee last season on October 24. If you believe the Chiefs will win Super Bowl 57, this fact doesn’t do much, except maybe increase your confidence in their quality. However, if you believe the Eagles are destined to win this game, it provides you options. If you believe this Chiefs trend will continue for another game, you could bet on a Philadelphia winning margin of 1-6 points. This prop pays out at +295 odds at Caesars Sportsbook, a far better return than simply betting the Birds moneyline or spread.

Click here and provide Caesars NY promo code ESNYXLFULL to acquire a $1,250 first bet on Caesars for tonight’s game.

By clicking any link on this page to join, new users will automatically engage that FanDuel NY promo code. As a result, their initial wager will be a $3,000 No Sweat First Bet on any upcoming action, including SBLVII.

Super Bowl LVII kicks off in Glendale, Arizona at 6:30p ET on Sunday, February 12. The Philadelphia Eagles will represent the NFC against the AFC’s champion, Kansas City. This will be the Chiefs’ third Super Bowl in the last four years with Patrick Mahomes at quarterback. Head coach Andy Reid will face his old team, a major subplot. Additionally, the Kelce brothers, Jason and Travis, will become the first sibling duo to do battle in a Super Bowl. This promotion allows you to bet any aspect of this season finale, or any other sporting event you might like.

FanDuel NY Promo Code Unlocks Massive Phi-KC SB Wager

As soon as the Super Bowl matchup was set, FanDuel Sportsbook debuted an industry-rattling new user promotion. With the help of an exclusive FanDuel NY promo code, registrants can claim a $3,000 No Sweat First Bet. In other words, if the bet wins, the new patron receives their payment like any normal winning wager. However, if that first pick loses, FanDuel will refund the loss up to $3,000. That reimbursement comes in the form of bet credits matching the amount of the loss.

Consequently, the bettor can make up to $3,000 more wagers using those bet credits without depositing another dime. Moreover, the No Sweat First Bet is valid any game in any sport, not just the Super Bowl. Additionally, the new member can select any type of wager for their pick, including parlays, props, moneyline, and more.

To clarify this promotion with some perspective, you just don’t see bonuses of this magnitude. Other sportsbook operators will occasionally throw around $1,000 or $1,500 wagers of this nature. However, you can’t find a $3,000 bet like this on the market.

And, given that not everyone has the $3,000 to front for this, FanDuel still protects first bets smaller than that, as well. In other words, by claiming this bonus offer, you will hold in your hands a bet that can be whatever you want it to be. And, if you’re somehow wrong, FanDuel will refund your loss in full with bet credits up to $3,000.

Simple Process Engages FanDuel NY Promo Code Automatically

FanDuel Sportsbook knows that, even with an elite promotion like this one, potential clients can still be finicky. As such, the industry giants structured the sign-up and bonus acquisition processes to be quick and painless. Consequently, you can now create an account and claim your $3,000 No Sweat First Bet in minutes. The following four-step guide can make that happen for you:

  • Above all, start by clicking here or any of this page’s links. This will ensure our FanDuel NY promo code is installed automatically for you.
  • After that, register for your first-time FanDuel Sportsbook account by inputting all required data fields. For example, you will have to supply your full name, home address, date of birth, and more.
  • Subsequently, you must make a first deposit of at least $10 to qualify for the offer. However, you will want to ensure that your deposit is large enough to cover your intended No Sweat First Bet.
  • Lastly, lock in your No Sweat First Bet, knowing FanDuel will reimburse you up to $3,000 in bet credits if it loses.

This promotion extends beyond New York state lines to all states where FanDuel Sportsbook is active. You can utilize any of our links to claim this great prize in any of those other states, as well. Other participating states: AZ, CO, CT, IL, IN, IA, KS, LA, MD, MI, NJ, OH, PA, TN, VA, WV, WY.

SB TD Scorer Props Provide Possible First Bet Option

Anyone utilizing our FanDuel NY promo code for that $3,000 No Sweat First Bet has some work to do. After all, they will have the all-important task of deciding what that initial wager should be. There are countless games in numerous sports, each loaded with their own plethora of valid betting options.

The Super Bowl is the pinnacle of the wagering option pyramid, with props as far as the eye can see. This page’s promotion allows you to pick any of them for your critical first wager. Some registrants might elect to deploy theirs on a touchdown scorer prop. These have become wildly popular and there are many different TD scorer props available now. We shared the five players below who FanDuel Sportsbook deems most likely to score a touchdown during the Super Bowl:

  • Travis Kelce (KC): -125.
  • Jalen Hurts (Phi): +105.
  • Isiah Pacheco (KC): +115.
  • Miles Sanders (Phi): +120.
  • A.J. Brown (Phi): +125.

Additionally, Caesars sweetens the pot with two other nice stocking stuffers than bulk up the registrant’s new account.

Caesars Sportsbook NY Promo Includes Three Bonuses

Anyone currently within New York state lines still has time to enjoy a Caesars Sportsbook NY promo before SBLVII. As Reward Credits accrue, the patron can redeem them for entertainment rewards such as dining vouchers and hotel stays.

The star of the show here, however, is a $1,250 first bet on Caesars. This promotion provides you up to $1,250 worth of protection on your initial wager. The kicker, though, is that your first bet can employ any bet type in any sport. Therefore, you aren’t relegated to using just straight wagers or betting on the Super Bowl itself. Instead, you enjoy complete control over your initial bet and any subsequent wager using bet credits.

Securing Caesars Sportsbook NY Promo Takes Just Four Steps

  • Lastly, lock in any first wager you wish, with Caesars refunding a loss up to $1,250 in bet credits.

Who Reaches Paydirt First for Philadelphia?

For a Super Bowl with such a close spread and high total, there are many questions that bettors need to answer. Anyone who feels they have the right answer to any of those questions can put their instincts to work. After all, Caesars has a never-ending supply of betting options for the Eagles-Chiefs Super Bowl. Moreover, our Caesars Sportsbook NY promo arms you with a considerable first bet on Caesars that works with any of those wagering options.

With the booming popularity of the touchdown scorer props, many bettors will look that way for their first bet. The Eagles are small favorites in this contest that has a total above 50. Therefore, we should expect several touchdowns from the Birds tonight. One available prop focuses on which player will score Philadelphia’s first touchdown. To clarify, here are the five players Caesars thinks most capable of crossing the goal line first for the Eagles:

  • Miles Sanders (+300).
  • Jalen Hurts (+350).
  • A.J. Brown (+450).
  • Dallas Goedert (+600).
  • DeVonta Smith (+650).

Who Will Score the Chiefs’ First TD?

The $1,250 first bet on Caesars provided by our Caesars NY promo code has no restrictions. Therefore, it makes sense for registrants to explore all of their various betting options, especially in SBLVII. There are pages upon pages of possible wagers, from props to alternate spreads/totals and beyond.

In recent seasons, touchdown scorer props have gained a ton of traction in the betting community. The Eagles-Chiefs Super Bowl market has all kinds of TD scorer props available. With a game that has a narrow spread and a total set in the 50s, you can expect scoring by both teams. One question many will ask today centers around who will score Kansas City’s first touchdown. Here are the five Chiefs that Caesars deems most likely to reach paydirt first for KC:

  • Travis Kelce (+300).
  • Isiah Pacheco (+450).
  • Jerick McKinnon (+500).
  • Marquez Valdes-Scantling (+800).
  • Kadarius Toney (+850).

Baseball is literally right around the corner, folks. Not only are World Baseball Classic rosters set, but the Mets, the Yankees, and the rest of MLB will be reporting to Spring Training very soon.

We’ve seen player projections for 2023 get released over the past few weeks, but we’ve reached another level since standings projections are beginning to become public.

The first I’ve seen are Dan Szymborski’s ZiPS projections. He released the start-of-spring American League and National League standings this week. As usual, projections are just that, and they should be taken with a grain of salt. But still, it’s something else for us to talk about, and they help set realistic expectations for the upcoming season.

We have Yankees- and Mets-related takeaways/observations to share. Before that happens, though, here are the details. Below is a screenshot of the projected AL East standings for 2023:

yankees al east projections
via FanGraphs

And here are the projected NL East standings for 2023:

mets nl east projections
via FanGraphs

Postseason and World Series odds

Yankees

It’s not surprising to see the Yankees projected to win the AL East again. After all, they just took home the division title in 2022 off the strength of a 99-win campaign. Aaron Judge is back and Carlos Rodon is joining the party in what looks to be a stacked rotation.

When looking at New York’s 75.8% chances of making the playoffs and 8.0% odds to win the World Series, it’s among the American League’s highest. That’s easy enough to do since the AL Central could once again be a war of attrition. Only three AL clubs have playoff odds greater than 70% heading into Spring Training, and the Yankees are the second-highest.

Those same three AL clubs (New York, Toronto, and Houston) are the only ones with better than a 5% chance of winning the World Series. And once again, the Bronx Bombers rank as the second-best.

Mets

ZiPS account for roster depth. So, the fact that the Mets’ percentages are so high means ZiPS anticipates them to be good, even if the injury bug hits. And it probably will at some point. Mostly because six months is a long season, and also because it’s the Mets.

Five NL clubs currently have playoff odds better than 70%, but just two are above 80%. Unfortunately for the Mets, the other squad resides in their division. In addition to that, New York and the Atlanta Braves have the two highest World Series winning odds, both eclipsing 10%.

Any way you slice it, postseason baseball is the expectation for each borough in 2023.

Familiar dragons need to be slayed

Yankees

Winning in the regular season hasn’t been a problem for the Bombers. They’ve finished with a winning record in each of the past three decades. More times than not, those performances have led them into October.

However, the Yankees haven’t appeared in a World Series since winning it all in 2009. That’s one of the longest droughts in franchise history, and one team has been to blame more than most: the Houston Astros.

Houston is not just the defending champion. The organization has reached at least the ALCS in each season since 2017. New York has reached the postseason seven times since 2015. They’ve been eliminated from the playoffs by the Astros four of those times, with the last three occasions being in the ALCS.

Unsurprisingly, Houston’s 90 wins, 78.2% playoff odds, and 9.1% odds of winning the World Series are all AL-best projections. If the Yankees want to get back to the Fall Classic, they’ll probably have to exorcise some Houston demons along the way.

Mets

The Mets were eliminated by the San Diego Padres in the Wild Card Round of last year’s playoffs. That NL West squad should be in the mix again once October comes around. However, the Amazins will have to deal with Atlanta throughout the regular season.

As we can see from the above projection, these two will likely be duking it out for the next few months. It’s not quite the same as the Yankees-Astros situation, but for the Mets to take another step forward, they need to take care of the Braves.

Atlanta has a great young core group of players who are all seemingly under contract for the rest of this millennium at below-market rates. Sure, they won the 2021 World Series, but their recent stretch of success goes beyond that. They’ve also captured the NL East title each of the last five seasons, reaching at least the NLCS twice during that span.

For the Mets, the road goes through Atlanta.

Divisional races should be tight

Yankees

The Bombers won the AL East by a comfortable seven-game margin in 2022. Most of that is thanks to an incredible first half. Outside of Judge, New York struggled through July and August, periodically making things a little too close for comfort.

The AL East had three teams qualify for the postseason last year (New York, Blue Jays, and Rays). That could very easily happen again, and who knows how pesky the Baltimore Orioles will be after posting their first winning campaign since 2016.

For New York, it’ll be a matter of consistency. There’s nothing wrong with coming out of the gates fast and being one of MLB’s best teams. It just can’t be followed with a month or two of below-.500 baseball.

Mets

The Amazins also started fast in 2022. They took advantage of the Braves World Series hangover and jumped out to a 10.5-game divisional lead by Memorial Day. Of course, that’s when Atlanta caught fire and eventually overtook New York (by way of a head-to-head tiebreaker).

ZiPS is projecting another two-horse NL East race in 2023, but I’m not buying that. The Phillies had a solid offseason and got a huge upgrade at shortstop in Trea Turner. Lowering the emphasis on divisional play this year could be a factor, but I think these three will all be close in the standings. And, after they all made the playoffs last season, that could easily happen again.

We had to do a triple take with this. That’s how convinced we were it was a parody account.

Yes, we realize the Nets appear to do this for a lot of players they move on from. But if there was ever a moment to instruct the social media team to ignore protocol, this was it. Markieff Morris will be OK without his farewell graphic. The guy’s played for eight teams, he won’t mind. Kyrie Irving ran roughshod for three years and the entire organization disgraced itself many times over catering to him. He’s gone now. It’s time to get some dignity back.

MORE: This Nets experiment was always doomed to fail

It has been comical to see #NetsTwitter walk around in a daze the past few days, wondering how all of this happened. It is really quite simple: Irving happened. Pull up the Tim Robinson in the hot dog suit meme. We’ve found the guy who did this. Irving sabotaged the 2021-22 team by refusing to get vaccinated, pushing James Harden out of town. And he sabotaged this season by demanding his recent trade to the Mavericks with a despicable dash of antisemitic sympathizing thrown in, pushing Kevin Durant out of town. And yes, Durant also shoulders plenty of blame here as well for inexplicably hitching his wagon to Irving. But he at least showed up to play.

But hey, hopefully Irving feels respected now.

And he thinks one day it will actually happen.

]]>
It has been a few months since Mike Francesa ruminated about Woody Johnson selling the Jets. There have been no updates since. And there is no guarantee there ever will be any.

But that does not mean Gary Vaynerchuk is giving up hope. The entrepreneur and Gang Green fan has not let his dream of ownership die. Vaynerchuk has expressed interest before and he did so again during a Radio Row appearance Friday on the Pat McAfee Show.

Keep in mind, Forbes has valued the Jets at $5.4 billion.

“New York’s going to be expensive regardless. It’s not like I want the Saints or Colts,” Vaynerchuk said. “I want a certain team, it’s going to be what it’s going to be, I’m going to keep trying. … What’s scary is that I genuinely think it’s going to happen. What’s even more exciting is if it doesn’t happen, I tried.”

It is unlikely Vaynerchuk himself could buy the team outright. His net worth is nowhere near billionaire level. CNBC estimated his net worth at $160 million in 2019 — it has likely grown since then, but not to where it would need to be. But if he partners with others to bid on the team (if the Johnsons do eventually sell)? There’s always a chance. Because who knows who would be joining forces with him, and what their financial assets would entail?

We saw Alex Rodriguez and Jennifer Lopez try to purchase the Mets in 2020 with an ownership group that reportedly included billionaires Mike Repole and Vincent Viola, amongst others. Of course, that was before Steve Cohen and his over-$10 billion net worth eventually finalized a $2.4 billion purchase. But the former power couple were at least in the mix. The Johnsons are not selling right now, of course. But if they are down the line, though, don’t be surprised if Vaynerchuk and a potential star-studded line of investors start bidding.

Jets owner Woody Johnson was among many at the 12th annual NFL Honors event on Thursday night in Arizona. It was a big night for Gang Green Nation, too. Garrett Wilson and Sauce Gardner took home Rookie of the Year honors, while Darrelle Revis and Joe Klecko were elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

But before the festivities were underway, Johnson was chatting on the red carpet. And as with just about every conversation involving New York these days, he talked about the Jets’ current quarterback situation.

The most interesting conversation occurred between Johnson and ESPN’s Dianna Russini. She specifically asked him about Aaron Rodgers, but since he’s under contract with the Green Bay Packers, there wasn’t a whole lot he could say on that front.

Johnson did say plenty about the Jets’ quarterback situation in general, though. And Zach Wilson — if you’re reading this, it’s probably best to just close out the browser.

When discussing how things went in 2022, the Jets’ owner didn’t mince his words (quotes via Sports Illustrated):

The weakness right now is in the quarterback position. Whether it was management or whatever, everybody kind of regressed a little bit so what we’re gonna do is we are gonna look for an experienced quarterback to come in and help us and help develop these other young players.

Whomever the Jets bring in, Wilson plans on “making that dude’s life hell” during practice each week. That’s the right mindset to have, but it’s not like he’s going to beat out Rodgers for the starting job. You know, if he decides to join the Jets after his darkness retreat.

When Russini tried to get some specifics out of Johnson, this is how he responded:

I think you want the best quarterback you can get to lead the Jets. I think with a good quarterback and our great defense… and a good running game. Our special teams is really good. I think it’s plug-and-play, when a quarterback comes in it’s kind of an ideal situation.

This isn’t the first time Johnson has mentioned the Jets’ roster in this way. During his end-of-season media availability, he essentially said that a capable quarterback was New York’s missing piece. He’s not totally off the mark here, as the Jets’ defense was among the NFL’s best in 2022, while the offense was toward the bottom of the league.

What struck me the most is the directness he used in speaking about 2022’s quarterback play. Johnson isn’t wrong, but Wilson also isn’t going anywhere and the Jets will attempt to actually develop him while he’s backing up the veteran they eventually acquire.

Either way, it’s pretty clear the owner isn’t at all sold on the current (and possibly, future) potential of Wilson leading this offense.

He looked up to Rodgers while growing up, so that would probably be the best-case scenario in his eyes if the former second-overall pick becomes the second-string QB. There will be several veteran options for the Jets to address their quarterback issue. It seems like Rodgers is at the top of that wish list, but we’ll see what happens from here.

Good news for the Giants: Wink Martindale is staying put. The heralded defensive coordinator is out of the running to be the Colts’ next head coach, according to multiple reports.

Our take: There was never much chance Martindale was getting the job, and fears about his departure were a bit irrational. Sure, anything was and is possible with Jim Irsay’s quixotic coaching search. And Martindale does carry a Bruce Arians-esque charm; who doesn’t love a salty, highly-quotable old football guy who seems very fun to drink with? That said: The Colts need to get a young quarterback and develop him. It would have been a colossal gamble to entrust Martindale — a career coordinator on the other side of the ball who turns 60 in May — to do that (and to build a staff to do that). But hopefully he was able to get a raise out of interviewing twice.

MORE: We finally have encouraging Keith Hernandez, SNY contract update

Anyway, we’re interested to see what Martindale does with the Giants’ defense in 2023. At the risk of being called negative, we think there should be real concern about regression. Martindale did a lot with a little last season, but it was not an elite unit. Common sense tells us heavy blitzing and success in areas like third down defense is not always sustainable. And there are a lot of personnel holes still to fill — and doing so may be tough if general manager Joe Schoen goes for broke retaining Saquon Barkley and Daniel Jones.

The Mets have had a transformative offseason that’s led to more than $500 million invested in the MLB roster. That doesn’t include the huge new scoreboard and other improvements around Citi Field coming for 2023. Mets fans think owner Steve Cohen can do just about anything. The one thing he can’t do, though? Get broadcaster Keith Hernandez a new SNY contract.

The former first baseman’s deal to broadcast Mets games with Gary Cohen and Ron Darling expired at the end of the 2022 regular season. He’s been on the open market as a free agent ever since. In typical Wilpon fashion (they still own SNY, in case you forgot), contract negotiations have dragged on much longer than necessary.

Seeing Hernandez still unsigned with the calendar flipping from 2022 to 2023 has been annoying, but it doesn’t come without precedent. His last two multi-year deals were finalized in the middle of January. But, of course, we’re nearing the middle of February and he still doesn’t have a new contract.

Heck, as we write this, Mets pitchers and catchers are supposed to officially report to Port St. Lucie in five days. It’s technically not necessary that he’s signed right now, but what are we waiting for?

Thankfully, the New York Post‘s Mike Puma shared the following update on negotiations:

It’s about freakin’ time! I mean, not quite because there’s no report of an agreement being made. But still, we’ve finally gotten some good news on the final Mets-related free agent this offseason.

From what I remember, it seems like contract negotiations for SNY’s Mets announcers are only difficult for Keith. I don’t recall hearing about things dragging on for either Gary or Ron. If we use past contracts as a model, we won’t have to worry about Keith hitting free agency again for another three or four years (likely three at this stage in his professional life).

Could it happen on Friday? There are immaculate contract vibes for Hernandez on February 10th. On this date in 1984, he signed a five-year, $8.4 million deal with New York. At the time he signed it, that deal was the second-largest in franchise history. Things have changed a little bit since then on the player side of things.

Friday would be a great day for a deal to officially get done. But in all reality, as long as he’s signed before the first SNY telecast of a Mets game this season, all will be well. At least it finally looks like it’s going to happen at some point in the near future.

What a difference year makes, right? At this time last year, we were still waiting for the Mets and all other MLB clubs to officially begin Spring Training because of the lockout. But this time around, we’ve had the pleasure of a normal offseason. As an added bonus, the 2023 World Baseball Classic will give us meaningful baseball even earlier than Opening Day, which is March 30th.

WBC rosters were officially announced on Thursday evening, and there are quite a few current and former Mets players/coaches involved in the tournament. MLB Pipeline’s Jacob Resnick did the Lord’s work by tallying up every single person with Mets ties who will be participating.

He shared three pictures: one for current Mets players, another for former Mets players, and a final picture for those who will be coaching.

Here are the players participating in the tournament who are currently in the Mets’ organization. The team they’ll be playing for is included:

A lot of these names, at least from the MLB side of New York’s roster, aren’t surprising. We already knew these guys were planning on playing in the WBC. Spring Training in Port St. Lucie will be a little light once they have to report to their respective teams. The Mets’ entire starting infield will be gone, as well as a significant chunk of the projected Opening Day bullpen.

This will hypothetically provide more opportunity for younger players — like Mark Vientos, Francisco Alvarez, and Brett Baty — to get reps in. We also know manager Buck Showalter isn’t overly thrilled, but just wants to make sure his players do what they need to be ready for the regular season.

Two notable omissions: Kodai Senga and Starling Marte. Senga opted against representing Japan so he could get used to his new surroundings. Marte was originally committed to play, but offseason core surgery is the reason why he’s not on the Dominican Republic’s roster.

Here are those who have played for the organization at some point in their respective careers:

Pretty amazing to see Oliver Perez still being available to pitch, right? Those lefty relievers can play forever. Dae-Sung Koo knows a little about that. Either way, a little sliver of those 2006 Mets lives.

We’d also have to imagine that Robinson Cano is more of a glorified coach/mentor on the Dominican Republic squad, which is stacked with ridiculous talent. Yoenis Cespedes’ participation in winter ball hopefully got him prepared for this tournament. Matt Harvey will also likely be pitching for a 2023 contract with Team Italy. Those 2015 National League pennant vibes are immaculate.

Here are former Mets who will be serving as coaches during the tournament:

I haven’t heard Masato Yoshii’s name in a while. It’s good to still see him involved in the game at this level. And then there are three managers in Mike Piazza, Hensley Meulens, and Graeme Lloyd.

There are 20 total teams participating in the tournament this year. You can check out all the official rosters right here. The last time a World Baseball Classic happened was in 2017 when the United States came away as champions for the first time. Games for this year’s tournament will be running from March 8-21.

Joe Klecko had to wait a long time. Darrelle Revis waited for no time.

The two greatest defenders in Jets history will now enter into football immortality together. They have been elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame — Revis on the first ballot, Klecko as a senior candidate 34 years after he retired.

Couple the Hall calls with Sauce Gardner and Garrett Wilson each winning rookie of the year honors at NFL Honors in Phoenix and it was a banner day for the Jets. The only downside is they may get forced to play in the Hall of Fame Game this summer. But they will worry about that later.

MORE: Gregg Giannotti blasts Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving: ‘These guys suck’

Revis was a dominant, transcendent cornerback at his peak; a player who changed games on the field and flipped the league’s financial system on its head off of it. And Klecko was a standout pass rusher who had many things out of his control stand in the way of his induction for far too long before finally breaking through.

I don’t think it’s hit me yet as far as total acceptance or whatever,” Klecko said Thursday night after his election was announced, via NJ.com.

“I was talking to my friend the other day, and he says, ‘You know, you’ve got to get over this. … You belong. You’ve got to convince yourself you belong.’ And that’s one of the things after you wait 30 year and you finally get the call, even though you want it and you’re grateful for it and all, it’s still sinking in.”

Call me a Knicks loyalist, a James Dolan apologist (hilarious), whatever. It still doesn’t take away from how the Nets blowing up their team was inevitable.

A lot’s happened in the last few days. Disgruntled and moody Kyrie Irving is headed to Dallas after several battles with Brooklyn’s front office. Early Thursday morning, the Nets made an even more shocking move in sending Kevin Durant to the Suns.

Are we really surprised? It isn’t exactly an expert take that the Durant-Irving Nets failed. If anything, it’s more shocking how everything went so south so fast.

Let’s start at the beginning, when both signed with the Nets as free agents in 2019. Durant planned to sit the season recovering from a torn Achilles, which is fine. Yet, let’s take a look at his exit from the Warriors.

We remember Durant winning two championships on a stacked Warriors team in 2017 and ’18. But what about his bickering with media and arguing with Draymond Green as he approached free agency again? Sure, the two have patched things up, but the cameras were on for the initial argument. There’s no forgetting it.

The same goes for Irving. He’s a great scoring point guard and has been wherever he’s played. However, not without drama. He won a ring with LeBron James in Cleveland and demanded a trade because he didn’t want to live in the four-time champion’s shadow. The Cavaliers traded him to Boston, seemingly granting his wish in sending him to a young team where he could be a veteran leader.

Instead? Irving’s Celtics fell short in the playoffs two years in a row and he signed with Brooklyn despite previously stating he’d stay in Boston. We won’t rehash every scene of his Brooklyn soap opera.

And how about thinking adding James Harden for a whopping 80 games in less than two full seasons was a smart move? What about Harden, Durant, and Irving only playing 16 total games together?

Three-plus years. No titles. No MVP trophies. Just drama and wondering what would have happened if Durant’s toe wasn’t on the line in Game 7. Oh, and let’s not forget getting Spencer Dinwiddie back and also adding Mikal Bridges, plus draft capital.

Nobody will say it, but this endgame was, in a word, inevitable. Irving was always going to want out of Brooklyn, we just didn’t know how or why. Durant would eventually want to leave when he either tired of Irving or a rebuild was coming, whichever came first. Harden’s story getting into and out of Brooklyn looks almost like a bad video game side quest by comparison.

The Nets made their bed and now have to sleep in it. Maybe Bridges can keep the franchise afloat for a bit. Otherwise, the last few years might all have been for nothing.

The 12th annual NFL Honors took place Thursday night in Phoenix, Arizona, with the Super Bowl just three days away over at State Farm Stadium in Glendale.

And the two New York squads, while not participating in the Big Game, shined on stage.

The Jets swept the Rookie of the Year Awards, with cornerback Sauce Gardner and wide receiver Garrett Wilson winning the Defensive and Offensive Rookie of the Year, respectively.

Gardner was essentially a lock to win the defensive award. The fourth overall pick in last year’s draft was a star from the get-go, leading a revamped Jets secondary that finished the regular season third in the NFL with only 189.4 passing yards allowed per game.

While the young buck finished with only a pair of interceptions, Gardner led the NFL with 20 pass breakups and allowed quarterbacks to complete just 53.5% of passes for 452 yards, one touchdown, and a lowly 62.7 passer rating when targeting him. The 22-year-old’s efforts earned him a Pro Bowl nod, a spot on the AP All-Pro first team, and this prestigious award.

On the other hand, Wilson put together a spectacular first season despite poor quarterback play and play-calling from now-former Jets offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur.

The 2022 No. 10 overall draft pick out of Ohio State finished the year with 83 receptions for 1,103 yards and four touchdowns, leading the team in each category.

Even with the struggles of Zach Wilson (and Mike White and Joe Flacco), Wilson was sensational and has provided that receiver room, which certainly deserves better assistance, with great hope for the future.

And then, there was the Coach of the Year, awarded to none other than the Giants‘ Brian Daboll.

Daboll was hired in January 2022 and entered an absolute dumpster fire, to say the least. The Giants were coming off a four-win season and had just fired former head coach Joe Judge. Plus, there was the whole “retirement” of former general manager Dave Gettleman, who was at the helm of one of the worst eras of Giants football. The roster was in shambles, the team was in shambles, and the organization was in shambles.

But Daboll played a massive role in what was an even bigger turnaround. The Giants defied all odds, finished the season at 9-7-1, and reached the postseason. It was their first winning season and playoff appearance in six years. Big Blue proceeded to win its first playoff game since Super Bowl 46 over the Vikings before losing in the Divisional Round to the Eagles.

No, the Giants aren’t playing this Sunday. No one expected them to. But no one expected them to win nine games or make the playoffs, two major accomplishments Daboll did with a lackluster roster and a quarterback everyone wrote off just six months ago.

Ben Simmons has run out of big names to hide behind in Brooklyn. And this new nugget won’t help his cause.

The Nets had an opportunity to get rid of Simmons last summer without him ever taking the floor for them, according to The Daily News. And they would have gotten to stick it to the Knicks while doing so. The anecdote was nestled in a post-mortem on the end of Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving in Brooklyn.

From The News:

The Nets had an opportunity to get involved in the Donovan Mitchell sweepstakes, according to a source familiar with the Nets’ attempts to add talent to the roster this offseason. A source told the Daily News in October there was framework for a deal that would have sent Simmons to Utah, Mitchell to Miami and Bam Adebayo to Brooklyn.

It was the Nets who declined, and Simmons, due to lingering back issues that have impacted the integrity of his knee, has yet to string together an extended, impactful stretch of games. Head coach Jacque Vaughn is still working on getting Simmons to give his all for all the minutes he’s on the court.

The Nets have to regret this in hindsight. Also, imagine how much worse the backlash would have been for the Knicks if Pat Riley had gotten Mitchell with an assist from Sean Marks? What a world.

After the 2022 season finished sooner than expected, the Mets immediately launched into a crucial offseason. Many impact players were headed for free agency, and Max Scherzer was the only veteran hurler guaranteed to be back in the starting rotation.

You know the rest of the story. Other than re-signing Edwin Diaz early on, things were at a standstill until Jacob deGrom signed with the Texas Rangers. That’s when the floodgates opened. Justin Verlander, Brandon Nimmo, Jose Quintana, Kodai Senga, David Robertson, Omar Narvaez, and Adam Ottavino all agreed to sign with New York.

It was an expensive offseason for team owner Steve Cohen. But he wants to win. And clearly, he’s OK putting his money where his mouth is to make it happen. Of course, a narrative surrounding the club is that they spent all this money and “didn’t get any better“.

We won’t know whether they did or not until this coming October or November. But if we look at each area of the roster, there’s a case for Verlander being the biggest X-factor.

The offense almost got drastically better with the addition of Carlos Correa. Since that didn’t happen, this group largely looks the same. We can hope Narvaez provides more offense than James McCann did, and that Francisco Alvarez and Brett Baty join the club at some point to provide a youthful spark. Even with all their imperfections, the Mets’ offense produced the third-highest wRC+ in baseball last year.

New York’s bullpen looks like it’ll be better from top-to-bottom. It’d also be unfair to expect another historic season from Diaz as the club’s closer. Plus, bullpen production is generally quite volatile from year to year. The rotation is interesting because it pretty much got rebuilt from the studs.

Having Scherzer already there served as a good foundation. Carlos Carrasco is a more than serviceable fifth starter based on his 2022 production. Senga is an unknown, but Quintana is a dependable innings-eater and Verlander is the reigning American League Cy Young winner.

New York is likely just hoping for Verlander (and Scherzer) to stay healthy. Many Mets fans were seeing stars every time they thought about Scherzer and deGrom being in the same rotation last winter. It was a vision that didn’t even become a reality until the beginning of August because of another injury to deGrom.

With all things equal, deGrom is the better pitcher. But it was hard for him to be that for the Mets these past couple of years while on the injured list. And that was nobody’s fault — it’s just how the cookie crumbles sometimes. DeGrom could come right back and toss 180-200 innings for the Rangers in 2023. You know, just like he consistently did for New York prior to 2020.

We can’t know for certain if any player will stay healthy all year, Verlander included. But even with him pushing 40 years old, he’s put together a tremendous track record of durability. The 2020 and 2021 seasons were lost for him because of Tommy John surgery. Outside of that, he’s thrown fewer than 170 innings in a year just once since 2006. That happened in 2015 when he racked up 133.1 frames for the Detroit Tigers.

Expecting Verlander to post a 1.75 ERA again isn’t realistic. However, he hasn’t produced an ERA worse than 3.50 since 2014. And while deGrom is the better pitcher when he’s healthy, JV is replacing a hurler that produced a 3.08 ERA over 64.1 innings. That ERA is well within his range of outcomes while more than doubling the innings output.

Having the consistency of him and Scherzer at the top of the rotation is already a huge upgrade. Having depth in Tylor Megill and David Peterson will hopefully help those two vets stay fresh for the stretch run, while also helping Senga acclimate to his new surroundings/routines/etc.

On a roster that’s seen plenty of turnover the past few months, simply pitching every fifth (or sixth) day should be a significant boost for the Mets. It’s what they were hoping for last year and didn’t get it. There’s a chance of history repeating itself in 2023, but New York’s chance of getting the optimal solution is better than it would be with deGrom.

So, yea — I’m not buying the Mets-spent-all-this-money-and-didn’t-get-better bologna. Plus, do you really need to improve a 101-win team? The regular season wasn’t a huge concern. If the Mets win 85 games, squeak into the playoffs, and win the World Series this year, nobody is going to care, right? Right.

There’s plenty of risk baked into the Mets’ Verlander investment. What he brings to the rotation could make him a huge difference-maker, though.

The 2022 season didn’t end how the Jets were hoping. They went from a 7-4 record and thinking about the playoffs to losing six straight to finish 7-10 and keep the NFL’s longest playoff drought intact.

A lot of that had to do with the quarterback position. We’ve talked plenty about how New York is planning to fix that after hiring Nathaniel Hackett as the newest offensive coordinator. Do you know what wasn’t a problem this year for Gang Green? Their rookie players. They were fantastic.

If running back Breece Hall didn’t suffer a season-ending injury, he’d probably be in this discussion, too. But for this week, we’re talking about Sauce Gardner and Garrett Wilson. These two dudes are finalists for Defensive and Offensive Rookie of the Year. You’d imagine the chances of them both bringing home their respective hardware is pretty good. How often in NFL history has a team done that, though?

According to ESPN’s Rich Cimini, just twice:

They’ve been among the best rookies at their positions for most of the year. It’d only be fitting to finish it with a bang and make some history in the process, right?

Gardner’s first year in the league ended with First-Team All-Pro honors and a trip to the Pro Bowl Games in Las Vegas. He also accumulated 20 pass deflections and mostly shut down every elite receiver facing him week after week. His competition for this award includes Lions defensive end Aidan Hutchinson and Seahawks cornerback Tariq Woolen.

As for Wilson, he did a lot with very little. He lined up at wide receiver and looked in at four different quarterbacks under center throughout the year. This included Joe Flacco, Zach Wilson, Mike White, and Chris Streveler. Despite that, he pulled in 83 catches on 147 targets for 1,103 yards and four touchdowns. Those 1,100 yards are also a Jets rookie record, breaking the mark previously held by Keyshawn Johnson. The other finalists for this honor include Seahawks running back Kenneth Walker and 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy.

We don’t need Gardner and Wilson to win these awards to know the Jets have something special with these two. It’d be a great way to get the offseason started, though. What could be next? A veteran quarterback to help them get over the hump would be nice.

— NJCUGothicKnights (@NJCUAthletics) February 9, 2023

You just never know what is going to happen on any given night in the NJAC!

Complete chaos on Culver Ave. NJCU stunned Rowan, 73-71, on Thursday in truly bonkers fashion.  Ryan Savoy drills a 3-pointer from the corner to make it 71-70 with 2.8 seconds left, then Jason Battle corrals a tipped inbounds pass and shot-puts a floater from midcourt for the win. And with an insane call by Voice of the Gothic Knights Tim Moore. Rowan was undefeated in conference play and nationally ranked. So that makes this even better.

The game details, via NJCU:

NJCU (11-12, 6-10 NJAC) started off the night strong and stayed with the Profs (19-4, 15-1 NJAC) all night long before dealing Rowan its first loss in conference play this season. The Profs had previously won 11 straight this season and 21 straight in NJAC play dating back to Jan. 31, 2022, before the Gothic Knights dealt them the dramatic buzzer-beating blow tonight. Rowan started off the night strong and eventually built up a 10-point, 29-19 lead with 7:20 to go in the first half. Jersey City eventually chipped that deficit down to four points on a couple occasions down the stretch in the first and ended the first half down by just five at 39-34.

The second half was a different story, filled with countless fouls — including five technicals and three ejections — and free throw opportunities on each side, however the Gothic Knights came out on top with the seven-point, 39-32 advantage en route to the two-point, 73-71 victory. Rowan built back up to a nine-point, 43-34 lead with 18:51 to go, but then NJCU got it back down to two at 45-43 before things took a turn. With 14:05 remaining, a scuffle took place that resulted in a pair of double technicals and another single tech following a Rowan shooting foul, resulting in three ejections. The Gothic Knights, trailing by five at 48-43, converted on three of the four subsequent free throws to make it a two-point game at 48-46 — that started off a 5-0 run to tie it up at 48-48 with 13:55 left.

Both squads traded the lead back and forth until the Gothic Knights built up a six-point, 60-54 lead with 8:47 to go. Despite that, Rowan managed to take back control before leading by four points with only eight seconds remaining in regulation. From there, the story goes as Savoy and Battle do from three-point range …

Look, our personal college hoops motto is “We pay attention in March.” But this is still very awesome.

I’m about to provide you all with the type of hard-hitting analysis I always dreamed of when I thought about covering the Mets. Like, if I don’t get an award for this, then I’m going to be very upset.

Just kidding. Nobody is asking for this type of analysis off the heels of an interview with Steve Cohen, but I’m going to give it to you anyway. Mostly because I couldn’t shake the thought while I listened to the Mets’ owner chat with Howie Rose. And, the thing is, Cohen really wanted me to listen, so I did. And now we’re here.

We all have particular ticks or habits when it comes to conversations, getting interviewed, and public speaking. I’m certainly no different. I don’t want what’s below to come off as criticism. If you listen to anything I’ve done, there are definitely too many “umms” and “you knows” included.

When I hear a certain word too many times, though, it eventually becomes the only thing I hear. That happened in Cohen’s appearance on the Mets’dUp podcast this week. He spoke about his desire to make Bobby Bonilla Day a fun celebration, as well as many other things regarding his team and the fans.

Here’s the full interview:

One thing that didn’t change throughout the course of this half-hour conversation? The number of times Cohen said the word “listen” before answering a question.

He said it exactly 12 times. Here’s the breakdown of when it happened and what he talked about after saying it:

– 7:46: Rose mentioned the Carlos Correa situation, to which Cohen wished him well.

– 9:00: Talking about supplementing the team via free agency while rebuilding the farm system.

– 10:27: Giving his thoughts on how long it’ll take to fully restock the farm system to the level they’re aiming for.

– 15:25: Addressing his initial goal of winning a World Series within 3-5 years of him taking over the team.

– 16:31: Mentioned how the postseason can be a crapshoot and it’s important to get there consistently.

– 16:40: Same thought as the one directly above. Obviously. They’re less than 10 seconds apart.

– 17:51: He discussed how fun it was to be in the building when New York clinched a postseason berth in Milwaukee.

– 19:07: How often he talks with his staff, mostly mentioning general manager Billy Eppler and manager Buck Showalter.

– 19:47: Talking about how he’s investing in the organization’s future in various ways, not just the on-field MLB talent.

– 21:18: Mentioning how involved he gets in the baseball side of things with Billy and Buck.

– 22:22: How much he’s learned about running a baseball team since taking over in November 2020.

– 24:31: Keeping former Mets players and coaches engaged with the organization, like with Old Timers’ Day.

So, there you have it, folks. Most people — especially Mets fans — listen when Cohen opens his mouth. But there are also subtle reminders to do so throughout his appearances. Or if you’re like me, they’re not so subtle.

Gregg “Gio” Giannotti brought his blowtorch following Kevin Durant’s overnight trade.

The WFAN morning show host ripped into Durant and Kyrie Irving, saying the ex-Nets “suck” and represent everything wrong with the NBA and professional sports in an impassioned rant to open Thursday’s program, hours after Durant was shipped to the Suns and days after Irving was traded to the Mavericks.

MORE: Kyrie Irving was parody of himself with Kevin Durant trade reaction

“These two guys. I’m sorry, Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving, that you’re the poster boys for this. But you are,” Giannotti said. “These two guys are why people are turned off by the NBA, turned off by superstars in sports. Because of this behavior. And there is nobody, absolutely nobody, that can relate to this. Not a single person with any other job in the world can relate to this behavior.

“And it’s a turnoff. We’re paying attention to it because this is what we do. But if I was just a regular guy going to work and I was seeing what is going on here in the NBA, when the product in the regular season absolutely sucks, I wouldn’t come running back to watch these guys. There’s nothing about them that is endearing. There is nothing about them that you want to show your kids and go, ‘Here, look at this, this is a super star.’ The memories you’re going to have, like I had of Michael Jordan, or I had with Patrick Ewing.

“These guys suck. Every single decision they made sucks. The way they handled themselves sucks. They’re babies. And Kevin Durant was supposed to be above all of that. Instead, he goes in the offseason and requests a trade. That doesn’t work out. He threatens to fire the general manager and the coach at the time. And then when the trade deadline comes and Kyrie is gone, he goes, ‘Nope, I’m going to bail too.’ So just horrible stuff.

“[Durant] claims he doesn’t care about his legacy. His legacy is completely shot, to me, at this point. Even if he goes and wins a championship with the Suns. People are going to remember him from bailing and bouncing around and failing and all of these things that have been following him in his career more than anything else.”

Kyrie Irving made his Mavericks debut on Wednesday night — he scored 24 points in a win at the Clippers — and then walked off the court to learn the Nets have traded Kevin Durant to the Suns.

His reaction was even more comically delusional than usual. The guy has become a parody of himself.

“I’m glad he got out of there. I’m just praying for his happiness, praying for his well-being,” Irving told reporters.

“I think this was in the works like after Year 1. I wasn’t sure about whether or not I wanted to be in Brooklyn long-term because of things that was happening behind the scenes. I just did my best to put my head down and work as hard as I could. There were some unfortunate circumstances that came up there that were out of my control, whether it be the mandate with the vaccine, or missing games, being suspended, or just little things that just put just wrenches in our journey.”

Remember those Budweiser commercials where the guy is giving the post-game interview and blames his teammates for not falling on his fumbles? They should redo them with actual Irving press conference footage.

Being unable to play home games because he would not get vaccinated? Completely out of Irving’s control. Getting suspended for his promotion of an anti-semitic film and never really apologizing? That’s like, your opinion, man. Alienating James Harden last season and then blowing up a potential title contender this year by demanding the recent trade? Visionaries think different.

Also: Irving playing the disrespect card after he voluntarily opted in this summer is just spectacular. The Nets were awful to him. Not awful enough to pass on taking their $37 million, though. A true profile in courage. It is amazing Durant chose this guy to be his right-hand man. The Warriors must laugh about this every day.

Just when Nets fans thought there was a chance to take a breath after the Kyrie Irving trade, they woke up to more unfortunate news. Kevin Durant no longer plays for Brooklyn — he plays for the Phoenix Suns.

A couple of days after the Nets sent Irving to the Dallas Mavericks, they sent their last superstar to another contender in the Western Conference. General manager Sean Marks did land a boatload of picks, so that’s a good thing. Head coach Jacque Vaughn could still steer his team into the NBA Playoffs, too. But those championship aspirations from before the season started? Those are all but gone for now.

Instead of building a winning roster through the draft, Brooklyn decided to give the sign-superstars-and-have-them-bring-home-a-title route. It started in 2019 when both Irving and Durant decided to sign with Brooklyn at the outset of free agency. That effort ramped up by acquiring James Harden from the Houston Rockets in January 2021.

Just about two years from that trade getting finalized, they’re all on other teams now. And it happened after requesting to play for someone else.

The saddest part of all, though? The Nets and their fans didn’t even get a chance to see what these three could actually do together on the floor. Deep in Adrian Wojnarowski’s ESPN article discussing details of the Durant negotiations was the following:

Durant, Irving, and Harden only played 16 games together. Six-teen…that’s it! Over the course of an 82-game season, that’s approximately 19.5% of contests. And they didn’t come consecutively, so it’s not like these guys ever had a chance of getting into a groove with one another.

The same could be said about the acquisition of Ben Simmons (although he’s not on the same level as the other three we’ve been talking about). Brooklyn traded Harden to the Philadelphia 76ers at last year’s trade deadline in exchange for Simmons. He didn’t even suit up for the Nets for the first time until opening night of the 2022-23 regular season.

Between his ailments, Irving’s team-issued suspension, and Durant’s knee injury, there wasn’t a ton of runway for them in this case, either. The best glimpse of what could’ve been took place between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day. Brooklyn went from a 10-11 squad to a 25-12 team thanks to winning 15 of 16 games.

There are still a few hours left before the NBA trade deadline to see if the Nets flip any players they’ve just acquired. At the end of the day, Brooklyn will be just fine. A trip to the playoffs within the next few months could easily be in the organization’s future. Regardless of that, though, they’ll be licking their wounds from this superstar experiment.

Especially because it just failed so spectacularly. You can bet they won’t be doing anything like this in the near future.

The New York Knicks have acquired guard Josh Hart from the Portland Trail Blazers for wing Cam Reddish and a protected first-round pick, per ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

Hart, 27, thrived as a swingman with Portland this season. The 6-foot-5 wing is averaging 9.5 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 3.9 assists on the year. Hart has also been remarkably effective, shooting over 50% from the field. He’s only made 30.4% of his threes, but his true shooting percentage (TS%) is 58.6% on the year.

Cam Reddish, by comparison, was a non-factor in coach Tom Thibodeau’s rotation. He’s averaging 8.4 points, but hasn’t played since Dec. 3 despite being healthy. He can now get a fresh start in Portland alongside Damian Lillard, and playing for a Blazers team fighting for a playoff spot.

In Josh Hart, meanwhile, the Knicks fill two key needs. Hart won’t score much, but will provide just enough off the bench to make a difference. This should help ease the load off of Immanuel Quickley, who has struggled with his shooting this season.

Hart is also a solid defender, posting an 0.8 defensive box plus/minus (DBPM) this season. Playing for the defense-minded Thibodeau, he should put up even better defensive numbers in New York. Hart’s defense also gives the Knicks a reliable wing behind Quentin Grimes.

Josh Hart isn’t a dead-eye shooter like former fan favorite Reggie Bullock. Nor is he the same type of two-way threat as OG Anunoby, who the Knicks were linked to last week.

Rather, Hart is a hard worker who should fit right into Thibodeau’s system. It also doesn’t hurt that he and Jalen Brunson were teammates at Villanova and thus know how to play together.

And speaking of Brunson, he seems pretty happy about the deal:

Be it off the bench or in the starting lineup, Hart fills what’s been a big hole in the Knicks’ rotation.

Stay tuned to ESNY for more NBA trade deadline updates.

The Slam Dunk Contest is probably the best part of the otherwise meaningless NBA All-Star Weekend and Knicks fans now have a reason to watch it this year. According to The Athletic, second-year backup center Jericho Sims will replace Portland’s Shaedon Sharpe.

The 24-year-old Sims is averaging 3.8 points and 4.7 rebounds in 15.9 minutes per game this year. The Knicks were impressed with his long and lean 6-foot-9, 250-pound frame when they made him a second-round pick out of Texas in 2021. New York is no stranger to the Slam Dunk Contest either. Sims’ teammate Obi Toppin is the reigning champion.

Joining Sims in this year’s field are Pelicans wing Trey Murphy III, Houston’s Kenyon Martin Jr., and G League star Mac McClung.

Such is the state of the Slam Dunk Contest. There’s very rarely anymore star-studded pomp and circumstance. No more Michael Jordan, Clyde Drexler, and Julius Erving trying to outdo each other above the rim. Today it’s more about the league’s younger and dynamic players taking the court and doing dunk tricks for an adoring crowd.

Thus, it’s strange Jericho Sims was chosen at all. He stands out like a sore thumb compared to the rest of the field. Murphy is a strong three-and-D. The 6-foot-6 Martin is built like a wing, but plays like a dominant power forward. McClung is looking like a star point guard in the G League, and Sharpe is a developing guard himself.

Sims, meanwhile, is a backup center who rarely plays. Once Mitchell Robinson is back from injury, Sims will probably again struggle to find minutes behind Isaiah Hartenstein.

In the meantime, Jericho Sims can look forward to Feb. 18 in Salt Lake City. He won’t win the Dunk Contest. That’s almost certain. But at a minimum, maybe he can get some tips from Toppin so he at least puts on a fun show.

For many Mets fans, Steve Cohen taking over as team owner is one of the greatest things to happen to this franchise. And sure, New York hasn’t won a World Series yet, but for the first time in a while, the team’s trajectory is pointing up. Plus, we know Cohen will do whatever is needed to bring a title back to Citi Field.

He recently sat down with another legend in Howie Rose for a one-on-one interview. It lasted about a half hour, so as you can imagine, plenty of topics were discussed. Cohen’s desire to improve the fan experience at the ballpark, their goal of building a sustained competitor, and his desire to win a World Series within 3-5 years of buying the team was all brought up.

One of the final talking points was the organization’s desire to honor Mets history and past players more often. That happened plenty throughout 2022. This includes the unveiling of Tom Seaver’s statue, Keith Hernandez and Willie Mays getting their respective numbers retired, and most notably, the return of Old Timers’ Day.

Just about when it seemed like he and Rose were done talking about it, Cohen mentioned his continued desire to have a Bobby Bonilla Day celebration on July 1st. Bonilla gets a check from the Mets for $1,193,248.20 every year at the beginning of July. It will continue to happen until 2035, too.

In 2000, the Mets agreed to buy out the remaining $5.9 million of Bonilla’s contract. But instead of just paying it then, they agreed to defer that payment over the span of 25 years between 2011 and 2035, and have it accrue at 8% interest. New York is far from the only team to defer payments to players, but this agreement with Bonilla definitely gets the most publicity each year.

Here’s what the owner had to say about Bobby Bonilla Day after Rose asked what a celebration would entail:

We’d still have to decide it, but I’m telling you, it would be fun. We’d love to have Bobby do it. He travels around with his son, who is a terrific golfer, so hopefully, his schedule can make it work. But if he can’t do it this year, I’ll be on him next year.

Regarding some of the basics of the celebration itself, Cohen said the following:

I gotta find a big piece of cardboard for a big check. It’s gotta be big, though. And then let him figure out how to carry it home.

This is clearly something Cohen has been thinking about for a while. He’s been thinking about it so much, in fact, that it sounds like he’s already had conversations with Bonilla himself about it.

If this all sounds familiar, it should. Cohen took to Twitter on Bobby Bonilla Day 2022 to wish everyone a great day:

And right after his purchase of the team became official in November 2020, he shared a similar idea on Twitter. It was only after a fan asked him about just cutting one final check to the former outfielder, though:

If there’s one thing we’ve learned about Cohen since he’s taken over the Mets, it’s that if he really wants something to happen, it becomes a reality. Whether we like it or not, a Bobby Bonilla Day celebration at Citi Field will happen soon. Getting a glimpse of how much he’s thought about this, it’ll surely be entertaining.

For a little while, the sideshow that accompanied the Nets had subsided. Once Kyrie Irving returned from his team-issued suspension and Jacque Vaughn was named head coach, Brooklyn started to ball. Irving and Kevin Durant proved to be a forceful duo, as well.

This included a 12-game winning streak between December 7th and January 2nd, along with 15 wins over a 16-game stretch. The Nets went from a 10-11 record on November 27th to a 25-12 mark on January 2nd. Finally, things were looking up and Brooklyn seemed like a legit contender.

But now that Kyrie plays for the Dallas Mavericks, things are very much hanging by a thread. After trying to get himself an extension, Irving’s trade request was the next thing to drop. And in the blink of an eye, he was packing his bags.

Brooklyn’s goal prior to Thursday’s 3 pm EST trade deadline has been to load up the roster and convince Durant to stick around. Of course, it takes two teams to tango. It’s impossible to show KD they’re ready to compete for a title when other teams won’t engage with them.

Per ESPN’s Brian Windhorst on his podcast, some of the teams Brooklyn is trying to negotiate with would be interested in Durant if he became available (either before the deadline or in the offseason). Those teams are reluctant to help the Nets convince Durant to stay. That’s cold.

The Nets want to keep their lone star player for at least the stretch run. But as we saw with the Kyrie situation, it’s not just up to them. If Durant turns around and asks to be traded before Thursday afternoon, there’s a good chance it’s going to happen. And even if he sticks it out until the end of the year, it could be deja vu all over again with him making another trade request this summer.

This sounds like a low blow for Brooklyn. But it’s not much different than Joe Tsai refusing to deal Kyrie to the Los Angeles Lakers. So, if the Nets can manipulate things like this, so can other teams. And it may cost them their final superstar, all without ever getting past the second round of the NBA Playoffs with him on the team. Woof.

Before we begin: Maggie Gray is very good at her job and WFAN botched her tenure. The way the station capitulated to Mike Francesa in 2018 and threw Gray, Chris Carlin and Bart Scott under the bus was shameful. And even if Francesa had stayed retired the first time, in hindsight Craig Carton was always getting afternoon drive eventually once they realized he would not be toxic long-term.

With that out of the way … this is a bad take. And will always be a bad take. It’s like the people who bitch and moan about Super Bowl Opening Night being a silly sideshow. News flash: No serious journalism happens at Super Bowl Opening Night. Because that is not the point of the event. The point is to have a big spectacle to remind you the Super Bowl is an event onto itself. Sure, you might be able to get some good quotes from an assistant coach or the No. 31-53 players on the roster in a quiet corner. But that’s it.

MORE: Radio Row at the Super Bowl is one of America’s greatest traditions

The same goes for press conferences at a dais after the game. No one is winning the Pulitzer Prize asking a question alongside 30 other reporters and 10 cameras. You’re getting some basic answer that everyone in the world now has the rights to. It’s not like Nick Sirianni was about to detail how the Eagles plan to block Chiefs star Chris Jones, only to be foiled because his young son made a fart noise with his hands. Sure, if the kid is wildly disruptive, something has to be done. But it’s not like people are taking questions while holding a crying newborn. Everyone calm down.

We don’t think anyone had this on their 2023 bingo card.

WFAN morning show host Gregg “Gio” Giannotti is now embroiled in a brouhaha with FanDuel TV’s Kay Adams. The provenance of the feud: Giannotti joked on-air about Adams grabbing his “man boob” and “giving it a honk-honk” while on Radio Row at the Super Bowl in Phoenix. And Adams has apparently taken great offense.

“Kay Adams hates my guts,” Giannotti said to open Wednesday’s program.

“It has totally gotten out of hand,” added Boomer Esiason.

Word of Giannotti’s bit got back to Adams. And she was not amused, as captured by a CBS Sports Network camera.

“She comes by, she’s with this producer guy, who is just basically, he doesn’t look at me, nothing, he’s just walking with her,” Giannotti said. “And she comes up and I’m standing at the end of the stage here and she’s walking right by me and she goes, ‘Heard you were talking about me.’

“So I laughed, thinking she’s going to laugh at this. Right? She goes, ‘So I felt you up?’ And I said, ‘Well, I didn’t really say it that way.’ And she goes, ‘Interesting.’

“I would rather come face-to-face with a mountain lion than that look again. That just shot daggers right through me.”

What a world. Giannotti was praising Adams, too. Hopefully cooler heads prevail here, because it did seem to all be in good fun.

Michael Strahan has accomplished a lot. He’s a Super Bowl champion, a Giants legend, and a Pro Football Hall of Famer. His post-football life has been just as good. He recently earned himself a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Despite everything he has his hands in now, there’s one constant — following and rooting for the Giants. That’ll happen when you play your entire 15-year career with the same organization. We even saw him expose the Blue in his veins throughout this past season while working on the FOX NFL Sunday crew.

I mean, you know how the saying goes… Once a Giant, Always a Giant, Only a Giant.

With that in mind, you know he’s got some thoughts on how Big Blue should approach a critical offseason after their first playoff berth since 2016. Unlike the last offseason, the front office and head coach are set. However, there are decisions to be made regarding two of the more important positions on offense: quarterback and running back.

New York has plenty of work to do in the coming weeks and months. However, Strahan recently shared his thoughts on three things the Giants need to do:

  1. Re-sign Saquon Barkley
  2. Re-sign Daniel Jones
  3. Go get some wide receivers

Here’s what he said about Barkley (all quotes via New York Post):

You gotta keep Saquon. You can see that Daniel Jones is better with him in there, the team is better with him in there, he’s a leader in every single way. I think Saquon Barkley is one of the players that you have to keep on this team in order to build off what they did last year.

We know general manager Joe Schoen would like to retain Barkley. But it sounds like he’ll only want to do so if the price is right. They opened negotiations during the Giants’ bye week, and those talks have continued. Barkley has been open about wanting to be a Giant for life. According to a report from Tony Pauline of Pro Football Network, an agreement before free agency opens is likely.

The Giants have been more direct about their intentions with Jones. Obviously, Strahan agrees with that:

I think you have to keep Daniel Jones. You have to pay Daniel Jones. That’s just the way football works right now. And the hardest position to fill is quarterback. So, if you don’t keep him, somebody else will get him and then what’s your next move? There’s no guarantee anyone else is gonna be great. So I think that Daniel did enough to earn himself a great contract there in New York. I think he has the right temperament. I didn’t think I’d meet anybody or see anybody who’s more quiet than Eli Manning when they played, and Daniel Jones has accomplished that. He’s done that.

Whether it’s a multi-year deal or a franchise tag to maintain exclusive negotiating rights, Jones won’t be going anywhere for at least 2023. He’s going to get a hefty pay raise, too.

Strahan also said how it’d be great to have Mike Kafka back as offensive coordinator for the sake of continuity, but that remains to be seen. Last, but most certainly not least, Strahan said the following about helping out New York’s wide-receiver room:

Wide receiver’s probably the biggest position where they probably go look for a home-run hitter. They need some playmakers, some big playmakers.

Well, yea — that’s the understatement of the century. We can assume wide receiver will be a focus for the Giants early on in April’s NFL Draft. Or, maybe they find an established threat to join forces with Jones.

Time will tell how things turn out for Big Blue. The decisions made this offseason will lay the foundation for the foreseeable future, so many will be keeping a watchful eye. Strahan is definitely a part of that group.

Major League Baseball is going to expand to 32 teams at some point. In fact, it is somewhat surprising it has not already begun the process. Commissioner Rob Manfred has long said he plans to wait until the Athletics and Rays solve their never-ending stadium issues. But expansion means expansion franchise fees, which in layman’s terms means free money for the owners. And everyone loves free money, especially after losing so much cash during the pandemic.

Anyway, it’s going to happen. And when it does, former Reds and Nationals general manager Jim Bowden — now an analyst writing for The Athletic — wants to blow the whole damn sport up too.

[W]hen MLB finally expands to 32 teams, it should seize the opportunity to implement a dramatic geographic realignment of the sport. The league could do so while maintaining the American League and National League framework, but a complete overhaul would arguably maximize revenue and certainly improve the travel burden on teams.

(…)

It’s impossible to predict what will happen because there are so many expansion variables and scenarios. Yes, the AL and NL could survive. But I think the move to 32 teams is the perfect time to do away with those leagues and form Eastern and Western conferences consisting of four geographically-aligned divisions apiece. Four teams per division, 16 teams per conference. With significantly more interleague play (46 games per team per season, starting this year) and the universal designated hitter, there’s no reason — beyond tradition and losing some rivalries — to keep the present infrastructure.

Hey, other than pissing on the thing that makes baseball baseball, what’s there to lose!

The idea of the Mets and Yankees playing in the same division sounds great at first. But it would be a nightmare for all involved in the end. The fans would hate it. The players would hate it. And at least one owner would sure as hell hate it. You think Hal Steinbrenner wants to officially compete with Steve Cohen?

If MLB was smart — which, let us be clear, it is not — it would use expansion as a chance to fine-tune, but not firebomb, its current divisional and league alignments. And then it would close ranks. Interleague play is a concept that has run its course. With the leagues finally even again with even numbers, we can phase it out. Some back of the napkin math here says if we had four divisions of four teams, you could play 15 games against division teams, nine games against everyone else in the league and then nine total interleague games. That sounds about right to us.

Nashville will get one of the expansion teams. We’ll say Charlotte gets the other. They both go to the National League while the Marlins are moved to the American League.

American League

East: Yankees, Blue Jays, Orioles, Red Sox.
West: Angels, Athletics, Mariners, Royals.
North: Guardians, Tigers, Twins, White Sox.
South: Astros, Marlins, Rangers, Rays.

National League

East: Mets, Nationals, Pirates, Phillies.
West: Diamondbacks, Dodgers, Giants, Padres.
North: Brewers, Cardinals, Cubs, Rockies.
South: Braves, Reds, Charlotte, Nashville.

It’s not perfect. But it’s better than what Bowden was pushing.

First, it was the Empire State Building congratulating the Eagles on reaching the Super Bowl. Now, there’s a Philadelphia-based bakery openly rooting for the Mets in 2023. What has this world come to?

Pat McCarthy recently joined 880 WCBS to be the Mets’ pre- and postgame host for the upcoming season. He’s the son of Tom McCarthy, who is the Phillies’ play-by-play announcer. And according to our friends at Crossing Broad, Pat has been the voice of the Lehigh Valley IronPigs since 2018.

So, he’s got plenty of ties to the area. McCarthy also frequents the Collegeville Bakery when he’s in the area, so they wanted to give him a shoutout for his latest career move. There’s nothing wrong with that. What we see in the below Facebook post would’ve been completely fine…without the last line in the sign that’s pictured:

philly bakery mets sign

It’s understandable to see why Philly fans are annoyed at this, right? Using “Mets” to share a fun message about McCarthy is allowable, but ending it with “Let’s Go Mets”? Yea, I’d be annoyed if a similar NYC-area establishment did the same thing.

They’d never do that, though. Especially after seeing the Empire State Building light up green a couple of weeks ago. This wouldn’t have created as much of a stir if the bakery replaced “Let’s Go Mets” with something like… “Congrats, Pat!”

See? That wouldn’t have been so hard. But then again, we can’t blame them for being closet Mets fans. Phillies owner John Middleton isn’t afraid to spend big bucks on his club, but there’s only one Steve Cohen in baseball.

And yes, I know the Phillies just made it to the World Series. That’s all they need for bragging rights at the moment. But let’s not forget how the Mets completely dominated them in 2022. In 19 head-to-head meetings, New York went 14-5. There were plenty of memorable comebacks and rip-your-heart-out moments along the way, too:

These head-to-head matchups are always interesting. After the Mets reloaded with an expensive offseason and the Phillies supplemented their roster with Trea Turner, Taijuan Walker, and others, it’ll remain interesting in 2023.

It looks like the Collegeville Bakery will be torn now that McCarthy is working with the Mets. Probably not. But maybe. Either way, we can’t blame them.

Philadelphia made a major splash when they signed A.J. Brown during the off-season. He joined forces with Heisman winner DeVonta Smith, and they have been able to share the ball effectively. When you add in tight end Dallas Goedert, they have some big-time weapons. Kansas City’s receiving corps was banged up after their last game, so this is an interesting angle. Aaron Rodgers’ weekly appearances on Pat McAfee’s show are becoming like George Santos anecdotes: They just keep getting better.

Tuesday’s big takeaway, as relayed by Rob Demovsky, ESPN’s Packers reporter: Rodgers is going to go sit in a dark room for a few days to figure out his plans for 2023.

DMT is “a hallucinogenic tryptamine drug that naturally occurs in many plant species,” if you were wondering. So Rodgers is really calling in the big guns after that astrology seminar. Time to get molded in the darkness.

Anyway, it remains inconceivable to us that Rodgers would actually retire. He has just under $60 million in guaranteed money coming his way as long as he shows up. It’s one thing to say money isn’t everything when we’re talking about some loose change. This ain’t that. So the real question Rodgers needs to figure out on his vision quest is where he wants to collect that money.

Rodgers does not have a no-trade clause, but he does not need one. If he wants to run it back one more time with the Packers, they won’t have much choice. Even if they are ready to move on with Jordan Love. And if he decides he wants out, the Packers will have to send him somewhere he is willing to go. No one is trading for him — and giving the Packers a satisfactory compensation package in return — unless they know Rodgers is all-in.

If Rodgers wants out, the Jets make a lot of sense for myriad reasons. But so do the Raiders and Titans and potentially other clubs (although the 49ers seem to be out). So it will come down to what Rodgers is thinking. And that, he claims, depends on what he gets out of his time in the darkness. May he fine total consciousness there. Gunga galunga. Gunga, gunga lagunga.

Mets second baseman and resident hit machine, Jeff McNeil, just locked in a significant payday for himself and his family. Before heading to Port St. Lucie to prepare for the 2023 campaign, the ink has dried on a four-year, $50 million extension. That’s much better than going to arbitration, don’t you think?

We all had to come from somewhere, though, and it’s always fun to see pro athletes on the field, court, or ice when they were amateurs. That’s especially the case for dudes who weren’t regarded as top prospects. McNeil fell into that category. He was a 12th-round pick in the 2012 MLB Draft and didn’t hear his name get called until the 356th selection.

The 2022 batting champion didn’t have the benefit of a huge signing bonus and had to work odd jobs during his journey through the Mets’ minor-league system. That’s all a thing of the past now, thanks to being one of baseball’s most productive second basemen since debuting in 2018.

McNeil, a California native, spent his college days at Long Beach State. The power wasn’t there in 164 games for the 49ers. But, as usual, he could always hit. McNeil slashed .296/.356/.358 as a college player. As many do, he spent the initial part of his offseasons playing summer ball.

McNeil spent the summer after his sophomore year with the Santa Barbara Foresters. He was an integral part of the squad, which won a national championship. Here’s some footage of him legging out an inside-the-park home run:

The YouTube video description calls this a triple and an error, but it sure looks like an inside-the-parker to me. We don’t have a full view of the action, though, so who knows? Let’s just call it a homer.

I love looking around the interwebs for stuff like this. It’s a classic “Here’s what things looked like before they hit it big” type of situation. It’s also great to see that the more things change, the more they stay the same. His routine and mannerisms in the batter’s box all look quite similar (if not identical) to what he currently does for the Mets.

My Google sleuthing also unearthed the fact that McNeil was inducted into the Forresters’ Hall of Fame in 2019. Unsurprisingly, the press release said his “speed and hustle” were a big part of the Forresters’ title run.

Once again — the more things change, the more they stay the same.

Giants’ Daniel Jones better than Jalen Hurts? Similar to Yankees slugger Aaron Judge, Giants quarterback Daniel Jones picked a good time to have a huge season. While Judge was already an established player before his 62-homer campaign in 2022, Jones was very much an unknown. So much so that general manager Joe Schoen didn’t pick up the fifth-year option on his rookie contract last spring.

Well, it’s amazing what one year and a capable coaching staff can do. Instead of trying to find another quarterback this offseason, Big Blue is committed to retaining Jones. They’re also prepared to award him with a significant payday. But as we look to the future, how good can the signal-caller be?

If you ask WFAN’s Tiki Barber, he’s pretty sure of what’ll happen. Here’s what he recently said on “Tiki and Tierney” (quite via Giantswire):

He is going to be the best quarterback in the NFC East. I know that Jalen Hurts is a stud, I know that he’s amazing, got all these accolades, but he’s also got a lot around him.

Daniel Jones is in a situation right now with the Giants, Mike Kafka, and more importantly, Brian Daboll, where he is going to be coached into a top-10 quarterback. I believe that. I truly believe that; maybe that’s because I have blind faith in the Giants coaching staff. But I also know because of his skill set.

He’s 6-foot-5, he’s big, doesn’t have to move out of the pocket to see crossing routes, and throws and digs over the middle. He can stand right where he needs to stand and deliver every single throw. And if he needs to run, he’ll go run. He had 700 yards and seven touchdowns this year.

Thanks to the Eagles prepping for the Super Bowl vs. the Kansas City Chiefs this weekend, there’s a good chance this will mostly fly under the radar in Philly. After all, who cares, right? Hurts has performed at an MVP-caliber level and has his squad four quarters away from another Lombardi trophy.

Either way, this is a pretty bold take from Tiki. Jones had himself a terrific year, especially when compared to his first three pro seasons. His performance on the ground was stellar, but what he did through the air was probably a little more impressive. Mostly because New York’s wide-receiver room left a lot to be desired by the second half of the year.

We’re still just talking about one year here, though.

With Jones back in the fold next season, one would hope he’ll be more productive with additional offensive weapons around him. Could the signal-caller transform into a top-10 quarterback at some point? Well, I mean, sure — it’s possible. He just experienced a breakout in the first year working under a new coaching staff/offensive scheme and is still just 25 years old.

However, proclaiming right now that he’ll be better than a current MVP candidate seems like a stretch. But then again, that’s why they play the game, folks. We’ll find out what happens soon enough and if Barber’s “blind faith” in the Giants’ coaching staff will lead to him being right.
